Feeling Weak? Know the Signs of Iron Deficiency Anemia

Anaemia is a condition in which the number of red blood cells or their oxygen-carrying capacity is lower than normal. Iron deficiency anaemia is caused by a lack of iron in the body, which can be due to blood loss, pregnancy, poor diet, or an inability to absorb enough iron from food. It is the most common type of anaemia, and it can affect people of all ages.

SYMPTOMS OF IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA:
The most common symptom of iron deficiency anaemia is tiredness and fatigue. Other symptoms can include pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, headaches, cold hands and feet, and an irregular heartbeat. If left untreated, iron deficiency anaemia can lead to more serious health problems such as heart failure and an increased risk of infection.

TREATMENT OF IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA:
Iron deficiency anaemia is usually treated with iron tablets prescribed by a GP. It’s important to take the tablets as prescribed and to eat iron-rich foods such as red meat, dark green leafy vegetables, eggs, nuts, beans, and fortified cereals. Eating foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges and strawberries, can also help the body absorb more iron.

In some cases, iron deficiency anaemia can be prevented by eating a balanced diet that includes plenty of iron-rich foods. It’s also important to get regular check-ups to make sure you are not at risk of developing anaemia. If you think you may have iron deficiency anaemia, it’s important to see your GP for diagnosis and treatment.
